Asian Elephant Love, Part II: The Movie

Asian Elephant (Elephas maximus)

Explanation:  Last week, we introduced you to a rare and amazing scene of Asian elephants in south India ... including a small herd and a pairing that took place in the waters of Periyar Lake in Periyar Tiger Reserve and National Park.

Such a scene is seldom witnessed, never mind photographed.  This week we bring you "The Movie."

Upon approaching the water's edge, the small herd files singly through the jungle -- and it is amazing how large an animal can seem to disappear in the dense foliage, and how they can easily negotiate their way through the thick underbrush.

When they reach the lake's edge, the male, then the female, enter the water and begin a wonderful near-weightless ballet as they intertwine their sensitive trunks as the prelude to mating.
