Abstract Symbols of Ancient America
Entrance Pillars

I took the above photo on the top level of the Temple of the Warriors at the Mayan site of Chichen Itza, Yucatan.  It is a well-photographed site, here showing the "chac-mol" reclining figure in the foreground holding a ceremonial platter onto which the heart of a captured enemy or sacrificial victim was placed in a ritual of blood.

But it is the two front stone pillars behind the chac-mol that are of interest here.  These two Entrance Pillars once supported a roof over this temple site.  They form the vertical bodies of feathered serpents -- that ever-present symbol of earth-energy, fertility, and power.  At the base of each pillar are the serpents' heads, each with a gaping mouth ... just as they are symbolized in the Ceremonial Bar.  So this entire structure may have been an embodiment of the power instilled by the Ceremonial Bar.
