Abstract Symbols of Ancient America
Eight Faces

Along each side, and at each roof cornice, of the Temple of the Seven Dolls in the Mayan site of Dzibilchalthum on the Yucatan, are found stark images of squarish faces.  I took the above photo of one of the faces, also showing behind it the central "chimney" inside of which various platforms were erected probably to aid astronomical observation of key stars, constellations, or planets on dates important for agricultural activities.

The eight faces of the Temple of the Seven Dolls bear striking resemblance to the overall design of the Temple itself, as well as to other buildings at Uxmal.  They also conjure the brutish, squarish design of the rear head of the two-headed monster found at Palenque, as well as the sundry stone faces found at Teotihuacan in south-central Mexico.
