Explanation:  Welcome to the high-elevation Altiplano of north central Ecuador, South America.

The Altiplano -- Spanish, for "high plain" -- is the wide swath of the Andes Mountains where many modern cities, and ancient civilizations, have settled over the millennia.

The Altiplano extends from Ecuador through Peru, Bolivia, Chile, and even as far south as Argentina.

The average elevation of the Altiplano is 12,000 feet (3700 meters).  Air can be thin there.
