On The Fence

Northern Flicker (Colaptes auratus), Family Picidae
Oregon, USA

Credit & Copyright: Dr. Bruce G. Marcot

Explanation:  Who's this on my back fence?  'Tis a striking example of the avian family Picidae ... 'tis a woodpecker.

More precisely, a Northern Flicker.  Even more precisely, the Red-shafted race of the Northern Flicker.  Yet even more precisely, a male Red-Shafted Northern Flicker.  Male because it has a red whisker under the eye (lacking in females) (the red whisker, not the eye).

Populations of Red-shafted Northern Flickers are widespread yet declining, but are still extensive enough to not warrant major conservation concern.
