African Pied Hornbill

African Pied Hornbill (Tochus fasciatus), Family Bucerotidae
Monkoto, Democratic Republic of Congo

Explanation:  Resting in the remote central tropical African village of Monkoto, I hear a loud whoosh sound, looked up, and saw a huge set of wings alight onto a branch far overhead.

A hornbill!  More specifically, an African Pied Hornbill!

This is a not uncommon denizen of woodlands and village borders throughout central and western tropical Africa.

Hornbills do not sport a true horn ... but can sound almost like a horn during their vocalizations, although that may not be the source of their name.

This species belongs to genus Tochus, which is actually one of the moderate-sized hornbills in Africa.
