Amazing Songster of the Sandstone

Sandstone Shrike-thrush (Colluricincla woodwardi), Family Colluricinclidae
Northern Territory, Australia

Credit & Copyright:  Bruce G. Marcot, Ph.D.

Explanation:  Enjoy this beautiful, haunting, a capella birdsong, filling the canyons of this remote corner of Kakadu National Park, Australia.

This is a Sandstone Shrike-thrush, a denizen of these rocky towers, and endemic to the Kimberley Mountains of Western Australia and the "Top End" portion of Northern Territory.

Its populations are secure within its relatively narrow geographic range.

According to an information sign at this site, another name for Sandstone Shrike-thrush, in the local language-group Jawoyn, is Marlampirrppirr.  Say that name out loud after playing this week's video, and you'll see how the name mimics the song itself.

See how many different phrases you can recognize in its song!  This is one amazing songster!

This EPOW episode is dedicated to Deane Lewis, engineer, naturalist, photographer, and creator of the wonderful OwlPages.com.  Thanks, Deane, for hosting me in Maryborough, Australia, and for driving the nine thousand kilometers through the Outback to Top End, and back, and sharing our field adventures once again.  This Sandstone Shrike-thrush is for you.
