Fishing in Northeast India

Explanation:  Along the border with Kaziranga National Park in Assam, northeast India, villagers use large dip nets to fish the tributaries that feed the mighty Brahmaputra River.  

As we chugged downstream in a riverboat, I videoed how these ingenious nets function.  The nets are supported by a framework of strong, flexible bamboo struts.  The nets are lowered to the riverbottom by a first-class lever system, and left there for a time, and then later raised with fish caught in the mesh.  

Villagers graze, fish, and gather forest and grassland resources right along the border with Kaziranga National Park where potentially dangerous rhinos, buffalo, and tigers freely roam the tallgrass fields.
