Vaux's Swift

Vaux's Swift (Chaetura vauxi)

Explanation:   A fleeting streak across the blue ... a Vaux's Swift, breeding denizen of old-growth forests of the western U.S. and southwestern Canada.  This blurry smudge of a tiny aerial acrobat is feeding on flying insects on the wing, and is part of a larger breeding colony of 8-10 birds that nested in my chimney.  I taped its calls and annotated a surprisingly varied repertoire of vocalizations and sounds from this non-songbird.

Next week's picture:  Flap-neck Chameleon
